Spurs-Thunder Round 2 Preview
- Updated: April 28, 2016
After sweeping the Memphis Grizzlies in the first round of the playoffs, the San Antonio Spurs will kickoff the Western Conference Semifinals this Saturday night as they host the Oklahoma City Thunder at the AT&T Center.
The Spurs first round sweep of Memphis was expected, but the Grizzlies gave the Spurs fits in games 3 and 4 before San Antonio took control in the second halves of both games. Kawhi Leonard led the way for San Antonio, averaging 21.5 points per game while leading San Antonio’s top ranked defense, which held Memphis to just 81 points per game in the 4 game sweep.
After a scare in the first two games, the Thunder bounced back to take the final three games of their first round playoff series against the Dallas Mavericks. Aside from stars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, Enes Kantar had big games in the series to help lift the Thunder to a 4-1 series victory.
This is the 5th playoff matchup between the Spurs and the Thunder, but the 3rd since the Thunder moved from Seattle in 2008. The Spurs have won three of the first four meetings; including the Western Conference Finals two years ago. Here’s a look at how the Spurs and Thunder fared against one another during the regular season:
October 30th in Oklahoma City: Thunder 112 Spurs 106
March 12th in San Antonio: Spurs 93 Thunder 85
March 26th in Oklahoma City: Thunder 113 Spurs 92
April 12th in San Antonio: Spurs 102 Thunder 98 in OT
This will be a difficult series for sure for the Spurs. Everyone talks about the dream matchup in the Conference Finals between the Spurs and the Golden State Warriors this season, but Oklahoma City presents a tough challenge for San Antonio. The Spurs will have to control the glass and keep Durant and Westbrook in check. If they do that, they will win this series.
