Manfre’s Mock: Texans Draft 2.0
- Updated: March 16, 2017
Round 1 (25)
Forrest Lamp OG/T Western Kentucky
I know what you are thinking, “A GUARD???”, but hear me out. It all starts in the trenches. How did the Dallas Cowboys rebuild and create such a dominate attack on offense? They started with offensive line. How do you build an offense to be balanced if you do not have good offensive lineman?
While offensive line is not the sexiest pick, it does both fill a need and add value. This year’s draft class is weak in the offensive line department and if the Texans do not strike early they most likely will fail to fill that hole. Lamp has risen a lot in the draft process due to his outstanding tape against Alabama this year and his measurables. Lamp started all four years at left tackle for the Hilltoppers but is expected to move inside to guard at the next level. This is a player who is expected to start for the next decade at the guard position and who NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein compared to Zach Martin. Whoever is at quarterback for this franchise needs protection and with Jeff Allen not living up to last offseason’s contract and Derek Newton hurt, offensive line is a point of emphasis. Adding Lamp to a front line that will see last year’s second round pick Nick Martin to go along with Duane Brown, Greg Mancz, and the third round pick in this mock will go a long way in the development of this offense.
